Last week, West Hills teachers and Admin attended the virtual Equity Conference held Tuesday-Friday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. We were able to listen to a variety of presenters about many ideas within the area of equity. While all of the topics were illuminating, we agreed that

Dr. Gholdy Muhammad

Associate professor of Language and Literacy at Georgia State University, director of the Urban Literacy Collaborative and Clinic, and author of Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy

resonated with us,  with her framework and her discussion of starting with the idea of genius within each student and layering our teaching and text to "uncover"  culturally relevant and meaningful connections to help affirm students' identify.

WH attendees wanted to offer to anyone who was interested, the opportunity to talk with them about their experiences with the Equity conversations at the conference to encourage a broad dialogue for all within our school community. Please feel free to reach out to any of these colleagues who attended:

Amy Reid, Ron Knopp, Helen Davis,  Heather Maxwell, Debbie Dissinger, Tiffany Jokerst, Penny McDowell, Marilyn Cabral, Torben Holzhausen, Suzanne Sannwald, Karen Nylund-Lieb, April Baker, Carrie Gaeir, John Hoadley, Robin Ballarin.

We plan to discuss ideas gathered from this conference with Department Chair and Leadership at our next meeting as well and make plans to continue our Equity efforts with our WH Equity Committee and our campus professional development plans for the remainder of this year and into next year.

He underwent chemotherapy and required several blood and platelet transfusions as part of his treatment before going into remission in June 2011. Angel, now 11-years-old, loves playing soccer and Pokémon, and according to his mom he loves to talk! Your blood donation can help save people like Angel.

February 2021 Calendar: #ReadingBlackout (bit.ly/feb21cal)

To help celebrate African American / Black History Month, this month’s library calendar features books written by Black authors. Each title is hyperlinked to our online library catalog, which students and staff are always welcome to browse and use to request items for checkout.

January 2021 Calendar: GUHSD Resources (bit.ly/jan21cal)

Even though January's ending, I don't think I shared it via Wolf Pack Weekly and so the content itself may be of interest to you if you never saw it. Each day highlights a different GUHSD-specific resource that is available for students. I'm happy to help students with any of these!

Approaching Black History Month (and Beyond) with Historically Responsive Literacy (bit.ly/rst-cultivate)

Inspired by the recent SDCOE Equity Conference 2021 and guest speaker Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, check out a quick introduction to the pedagogical approach of historically responsive literacy and how this is an interesting way we may consider the curriculum and instruction choices we make.

COVID-19 Surveillance Testing for Employees

The Mollison Complex is now closed. Those County health care workers have been deployed to vaccination sites instead. Please visit other San Diego County Office of Public Health sites for testing or contact your own healthcare providers for more information.

Reminder:  The following testing schedule for all GUHSD staff is:

Last name A-E:  test between January 11 and January 22, 2021

Last name F-L:  test between January 25 and February 5, 2021

Last name M-R:  test between February 8 and February 19, 2021

Last name S-Z:  test between February 22 and March 8, 2021

What is surveillance testing?

Surveillance testing, also known as routine testing, involves testing people on a regular basis to identify individuals who may be carrying the virus yet be asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic.

The purpose of surveillance tests is to monitor the current state of the epidemic and slow the spread of the virus through early identification.  It is used to monitor things like whether the COVID-19 virus is moving into new areas, whether it is affecting some groups of people more than other groups of people, or whether the number of cases is going up or going down.

Who should be tested and how often?

School and district staff members are essential workers who may have contact with students or other staff. According to the California Department of Public Health, school districts and schools shall test staff periodically, as testing capacity permits and as practicable, with the recommendation being to test all staff over the course of two months on a rotating basis, where 25% of staff are tested every two weeks.

Where do I go for testing?

You may contact your own physician for their recommendation or look for sites on the San Diego Public Health  Department website. This information can change, so it is best to look up the newest information just prior to testing.

What do I do with my results?

Test results should be submitted to COVIDtestresults@guhsd.net as soon as you receive them.  Test results are highly confidential, and access to them are limited to HR leadership. Should your results record positive, please stay home and notify your principal/supervisor immediately.

If any staff member chooses to make arrangements for their own testing through their healthcare provider, the County of San Diego, or any other testing location, the staff member must submit their results to COVIDtestresults@guhsd.net as soon as they are received.

Hope you enjoy our very own Elise Reinert (Choir, Marching Band teacher) as she welcomes Q3!

Meet inaugural poet Amanda Gorman (excerpt from CalMatters.org)

Hours after Kamala Harris was inaugurated Wednesday as vice president of the United States, she swore in Alex Padilla as her replacement in the U.S. Senate. But they weren’t the only Californians to make history. Amanda Gorman, a 22-year-old from Los Angeles, stole the show as the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history. Gorman, who recently graduated from Harvardwas named Los Angeles’ youth poet laureate in 2014 and the first national youth poet laureate in 2017. She was chosen to perform at the inauguration after First Lady Jill Biden heard Gorman give a reading at the Library of Congress. Like President Joe Biden, Gorman struggles with a speech impediment. “It’s made me the performer that I am,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “When you have to teach yourself how to say sounds … it gives you a certain awareness of sonics, of the auditory experience.”

Here’s an excerpt from her inaugural poem, “The Hill We Climb,” which you can watch her perform here:

And yes we are far from polished
far from pristine
but that doesn’t mean we are
striving to form a union that is perfect
We are striving to forge a union with purpose
To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man
And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us
but what stands before us

And from our Library Instagram account...we just had to share.....
