Level 3 Instructional Guidance

February 24, 2021

In preparation for Level 3, we wanted to provide you with some updated guidance and reminders.

Work Load / Level 3 Adjustment
As we established at the beginning of Quarter 3, we are continuing with the following practices:
  • 7 hours of instruction for pure 9th and 10th-grade classes
  • 10 hours of instruction for 11th, 12th, and mixed grade level classes
  • Instruction is the combination of in-person, required live Zoom, and asynchronous activities
  • A weekly calendar that documents each week’s instruction and time allotments
Live Instruction for Distance-Only Students / Tutorial
  • Some students and their parents have indicated that they would like more opportunities to connect directly with teachers. Many teachers have found success live Zooming during class time. Additionally, the just-negotiated two-hours of distance-only tutorial per week opens up opportunities for live Zooms outside the normal classroom schedule.
  • A Quarter 3 and 4 tutorial log and new timesheet request form links will be shared today or tomorrow.
Athletics Are Coming
  • As more sports start-up, teachers are asked to show flexibility for our student-athletes if practice times conflict with after-school live Zooms or other activities.
Calendar Update
  • The 2020-21 Calendar has been updated. It now includes Level 3 group changes and adjustments to the Weeks of March 8 and March 29 to minimize confusion.
  • Friday, March 26, is considered the first day of Quarter 4. Teachers should push out their Quarter 4 communications with students on that day. It is considered a distance learning day, and no live Zooms should be scheduled.
  • Currently, Week 5 of the Quarter 4 is reserved for testing. Once the CDE shares its plan, we will make adjustments as needed. This could include moving that week to meet site and district testing needs.
Thank you.

Level 3 begins the week of March 1:
Groups A & C attend Tuesday & Thursday
Groups B & D attend Wednesday and Friday

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that the Grossmont Union High School District will move to Level 3 of our Reopening Plan beginning the week of March 1st, 2021. At Level 3, in the blended model, up to 50% of students will attend on-campus two days per week and will continue Distance Learning for the remaining 3 days.

There is hope for all of us on the horizon. Overall health conditions continue to improve, and COVID-19 vaccines are being distributed. Thanks to your diligence, we have also demonstrated that in-person instruction can be conducted safely. Public Health guidelines have been followed at all of our schools, and they continue to be successful. Thus, the time is right for us to move forward with more in-person instruction.

Your safety, and that of our students, is my top priority. We will continue to adhere to public health guidelines as we safely bring students to campus more often. We will also continue to grant parent requests for students to remain in Distance Learning only.

As students return to campus, required safety procedures will continue to be in place, including daily temperature checks, a face mask requirement for students and staff, physical distancing, and requiring those experiencing COVID-19 symptoms to stay home. We are encouraging our entire school community to refer to this document regarding what to do if one is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms.

With your unyielding commitment to safety combined with all of the safety measures in place at our school sites, I am confident in our ability to safely proceed with this plan. We will also soon be sending information to our community regarding a Virtual Reopening Town Hall, at which we will answer questions submitted by the public about this next phase of our reopening plan.

Thank you for your continued support, understanding, flexibility, and resilience. I look forward to welcoming students to school more often, as we continue serving the educational needs of our students and families together.

Thank you,

Theresa Kemper
Superintendent, Grossmont Union High School District

West Hills Level 3 Bell Schedule  begins March 1: Advisory is now two days a week (Group A & C on Tuesdays: 55 mins. periods;  Group B & D on Wednesday 55 mins. periods) so Thursday and Friday has 60 minute periods instead of 55 mins. Posters are being made for classrooms and offices and will be in mailboxes on Friday, 2/26 for posting on Monday, March 1.

On campus teachers (including visiting teachers) please read and use the links within this Level 3 FAQ document to help plan for this move. We are asking on campus teachers to complete this by Wednesday, 2/24 to give Admin and Custodial time to address rooms and furniture moves. Please note, this move to Level 3 may require extra furniture (book shelves, personal items, etc. to be removed from the classroom to accommodate our GEA MOU of 6 ft. distance from all individuals in the classroom etc). Any questions, please contact Cyndi Nowlen, Manager of School Facilities.

Please take a look at this chart of Athletics and our Athletics website
for the newest information. Our District published these protocols for
Coaches and Co-Curricular activities. Please contact Assist. Principal of
Athletics April Baker or Athletic Director Lucas Hondros with questions.

And now, for some British humor as we all live and work ONE MORE DAY.....
