NEWS from the WEEK......

Wolf Pack Staff,

We hope this message finds you well and that your Quarter 2 is off to a good start!

In an effort to continue improving communication to our students, families, and community of West Hills High School, we are upgrading to a new format of weekly, informative messages called the " Wolf Call Weekly." We will send out the message each Monday to our students, families, and community of West Hills High School.

WHHS Families will still receive messages from the school with specific announcements, things to remember, and highlights of which to be aware of via Infinite Campus.

We would love to include program highlights, newsletters, projects in your class, upcoming events, athletic info, social media handles to follow, etc.  that will help promote all things WHHS!

If you would like to submit a post, please use this google form to submit items for the coming weeks in Quarter 2. The post above (Oct. 26-30 is still a "draft" and we can include more items if you have something for next week.) We will add Alpha + and Honor Roll students soon. The deadline to submit items is Friday at 12:00 PM.

Thank you for your continued support for all students at West Hills!

John Hoadley
Assistant Principal

Check out this video honoring Kathy Worley from the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools program. Find her part at 6:09 into the video. Congratulations Kathy!! Thank you for all you do for our students and West Hills!

Thank you teachers for continuing to help us follow up on students!

Just a friendly reminder to use THIS FORM to document any student(s) not engaging with online learning 60% or less each week. SB98 requires us to follow up with any student who is not engaging after the teacher has contacted the student and parent. "Engagement" is completing and turning in work. "Contact" is via phone and email.  Counselors and office staff are required to document and demonstrate efforts beyond the teacher to engage with school. This document assists us in doing so. You would complete this EACH WEEK after you have entered engagement / participation for the week.  One student only per form. Please complete for each student not engaging at at least 60%.

Tutorial Schedule: Thank you to our quality substitutes for staffing period 7/8 tutorials in person and / or on Zoom beginning Tuesday, Oct. 27. Some will continue to staff tutorials from
1-2 pm Tuesday - Friday via Zoom as well. Students and parents are encouraged to work with their teacher of record first and to use our tutorials as supplemental to their teacher's guidance and time offerings for Zoom learning.

Supporting Developmental Relationships
We know that strong adult-student relationships are essential to student success, whether in an online, hybrid, or in-person setting. Search Institute has identified five elements that make relationships powerful in young people’s lives:
  • Express care
  • Challenge growth
  • Provide support
  • Share power
  • Expand possibilities

The Developmental Relationships Framework will help you and your staff better support your students as they discover who they are, cultivate abilities to shape their own lives, and learn how to engage with and contribute to the world around them.

GUHSD letter to Employees regarding Covid-19 Testing

If you would like to be tested for Covid-19, you may use your own physician, or access one of the four sites listed below that have been exclusively established by the County of San Diego for school employees. You do not need an appointment to get tested and there is no cost to you. You may be asked to provide identification that shows you work for a school district (i.e., staff ID badge). The process is quick and easy, and the turnaround time for results is estimated at 24 hours or less. Tests are conducted by a shallow nasal swab and may be self-collected by the individual while observed by a public health nurse, or may be collected by public health staff if the individual chooses. Please reach out if you have any questions. Thank you and take care.

East County - School Personnel Testing Site

Mollison Complex (301 N. Mollison Ave., El Cajon, CA 92021)

Hours: Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Metro Region - School Personnel Testing Site

Harold J. Ballard Parent Center (2375 Congress St., San Diego, CA 92110)

Hours: Tuesday-Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

North County - School Personnel Testing Site

Del Mar Fairgrounds (2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, CA 92014)

Hours: Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

South County - School Personnel Testing Site

650 L St., Chula Vista, CA 91911

Hours: Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Note:

In addition to the four sites exclusively established for school employees, there are 41 public sites where an employee may be tested at no charge. You may access the full list by clicking here.

Please read this information regarding our Level 2 Tutoring Schedule beginning next week. We are grateful to our visiting teachers (substitutes) who are willing and able in conjunction with our permanent teachers,  to meet the needs of our students in this unusual time. Check out our Visiting Teacher Photo Roll to put a name and face together of these fine folks.

Please note, too, a reminder of our voluntary system for ¨saving¨ the 1-2 p.m. time for per class period tutoring whenever possible. Teachers on campus are remaining behind to tutor and this is really important to them and their students on campus. If you can please hold content tutorials open to ¨all students" outside the 1-2 p.m. time period whenever possible, they appreciate it! Some students have indicated they can not attend their class period tutorial because a content tutorial open to all is happening at the same time, forcing students to ¨choose¨ between their period 2, 4 or 6 class, and a content area.

Look for the next email with our site D/F report by Department to see the very real effect distance learning is having on our students, thus the need for credit repair [addressing units of study to earn credit rather than repeating entire course, generally offered to students with 40-45% or better grade], credit recovery [repeating the entire course due to a ¨D¨ or an ¨F¨ {UC / Colleges need to see a ¨C¨ or better} ] and tutoring for all students and content areas. Counseling, Admin and DC & Leadership team are all working on many fronts to address the needs of our students and create plans that can help kids. The Quarter system is incredibly helpful in this regard since students have many opportunities within the three quarters left to get ¨back on track" towards graduation.

Schoology Monday Reminder

Each Monday through December 7th GUHSDtech is partnering with Schoology to offer 1-hour Zoom trainings for interested GUHSD teachers. This Monday, October 19, there will be two offerings: "Introduction to Assessments" and "Using Google with Schoology." You will find registration links to these sessions and all other offerings at bit.do/SGYmondays. Space is limited to 25 participants per session so don't wait!

Join the GUHSD One Book, One San Diego Email List & Request a Print Copy

Thanks to our collaborative relationship with the San Diego County Library, our school was able to get 34 copies of They Called Us Enemy for free! While the book is not yet on the approved textbook list, students may be invited to optionally read the book as an independent read, as part of a literature circle, or just for fun! Teachers, staff, or students who would like to request a print copy just fill out this form. You may also email Suzanne (ssannwald@guhsd.net) if you would like to request multiple copies on a first come, first serve basis. NOTE: Even after One Book, One San Diego, the 34 copies will be available in our textbook collection for future use. Learn even more at bit.ly/rst-tcue.

Thank you!

After watching Terrence Talley  and his short message, "What you do matters"
just wanted to make sure you know WHAT YOU DO and WHO YOU ARE matters!
Keep on keepin' on Wolf Pack! We GOT THIS!
