GREAT JOB on the Faculty and Staff Airbands performance folks! We are searching for video of the event and want to THANK ALL who participated--it IS "Hard to be a Teen" and huge THANK YOUs to Deborah Heeb for being our creative genius, Danny Tricarico for writing terrific dialogue, and Ardy Riego for shepherding ASB through this event! Students LOVED it and commented on how funny and fun this was! As soon as we get video, we will send it out.

Thank you all for your care, concern, and engagement with each other and our students on this critical topic. There is student interest in both the March 14 and the April 20 Walkouts and as we check in with teachers and departments, we continue to monitor and work with students on insuring our educational program while being sensitive to their desire for action and expressing their ideas.
On the weekend, the San Diego Union published this article regarding an "Interactive Map showing School Violence in San Diego County". Both the Grossmont Union High School District and West Hills are noted in the article. We  had three expulsions in the 2016-17 school year (the most recently public data published) and NONE of them were for guns. Safety remains our top concern and we will ALWAYS vigorously  and with integrity and due process pursue any and all matters brought to us regarding safety, in both the physical and social-emotional needs of all involved.
Please refer to this email for our current approach and know that we are eager to continue to listen, support, and maintain our educational focus and student and staff safety. More information to come I am sure.

OK honestly here is where I fall short since waking up early on a Saturday morning is not really my idea of fun, but hanging out with a bunch of friends from work does, and doing something to promote how awesome our school is- even more awesome!

To Kathy Worley, Suzanne Sannwald and Joe Sklenicka for hosting our OtterCares Foundation (OtterBox cell phone cases) and LIfeProof Engineers on Thursday, Feb. 15 for a day of "showing off" our Advanced Manufacturing and Library "Maker Spaces" supported in part with their generous $10,000 grant. We had terrific students who showed them projects and ideas they were working on and the Engineers spoke to our students about their careers and what they do in their everyday lives at work. We plan to GROW our Advanced Manufacturing and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Aerospace Engineering Pathways next year by add a year 2 class to the PLTW taught by Tiffany Jokerst (Math teacher).

Image result for nmsi grant

West Hills moved on to the Finalist round of possible selection for a $300,000, 3 year grant focused on expanding the number of students in Advanced Placement Math, Science, Computer Science, and English courses as well as increasing the numbers of students scoring at a "3" or higher on these exams. A Department of Defense initiative, we qualified to apply for the grant because we have 100 or more dependent students of active military parents. Teachers of these subjects met with a Grant Manager and Admin to review the program commitments and ask questions.

If we are selected, ALL TEACHERS teaching these subject areas have an opportunity to attend a 3-day work shop (July 11-13) here in San Diego focused on the requisite Pre-AP skills and strategies to support all students in being successful. AP Teachers of these subjects will have additional Professional Development with other teachers of AP in their subject areas, workshops with their own students led by College Board presenters and an NMSI Mentor in their subject area partnered to support them in the classroom. Students receive additional tutoring and support plus 50% of their exam fees are paid for, they can earn $100 for each AP exam score of "3" or higher in these subject areas and be better prepared for college AND career as they graduate high school.

We should hear by April 1 if we are selected. This is an exciting opportunity for our students and teachers. NMSI notes that the Department of Defense focuses the grant in these subject areas and know that it leaves many terrific AP subject areas out and are sorry about this. However, they also note that students participating will be using and transferring the same higher level thinking skills, study skills, and reading with analysis skills from these subject areas to all others. Their research shows in over 1000 schools with over 2 million students nationwide, this work supports student achievement throughout the entire school program.
