What a week! Start with Hello was an incredible week of kindness, reaching out, and being aware of how little it takes to include others so they know they matter. HUGE THANK YOUs to ALL Faculty and Staff who participated, wore buttons, supported students in Clubs and Activities to demonstrate and lead our school community in saying HELLO! Take a look at ALL THE KIDS who came out on Monday to kick off the week! Big thank you to Jamie Gwyn, Ardy Riego, Suzanne Sannwald, Dominick Maldonado, Krystal Kammeyer, and all the other adults who rallied their clubs, athletes, ASB, HOWL Leaders and many more to be leaders on campus this week!

I can't think of a better photo embodying our school that THIS one below...We are One, We are the Pack! is not only our culture, it is our guiding HOPE that each of us makes a reality in the work we do each day with each other, our students, parents and community members.

September overall was a HUGE month for social-emotional outreach and activity on campus. HUGE THANK YOUs to GUIDANCE, San Diego Youth Services and to the MATH DEPARTMENT for supporting and working with us on our "Check Your Mood" week earlier in the month. We then had our UNITY DAYS and I want to THANK every teacher and staff member who came out and participated in those incredible two days. We then had our Sandy Hook Promise Week with Start With Hello and again, that took ALL of us to be engaged and involved to support each other and our students. I am so very proud of all of our work in this arena. We also have MENDING MATTERS on campus each Wednesday working with students referred by VPs for issues of bullying, low self-esteem, attendance and low academics that we see via discipline referrals. All of these efforts are to support our student achievement and relationships in the classroom, on campus and in daily life. We will continue to support and work in this area as much as we work with academics, athletics and co-curricular programs.

Image result for No vaping
On the "not so positive note....", we continue to be vigilant regarding vaping and smoking on campus. We have had numerous suspensions for vaping in the last two weeks (about 12) and we will continue to intervene and hold students accountable. We have also informed parents about this issue and included visuals to let them know how the various devices look and the sneaky ways students are accessing funds to buy the vape device and the "vape juice" to put in it. The Federal Drug Administration is sending all public schools anti-vaping posters to post in restrooms and on campus as well. Thank you to all who continue to assist us with informing and educating our students about this illegal and unhealthy activity. Thank you to our 9th Grade ENS teachers for including it in your curriculum as well!

Image result for Family Survey

Each year the state and federal governments require families to complete a survey tied to public school funding. This is included with yearly registration or re-registration materials. Currently we are at about a 77% completion rate. We NEED 100% completion rate to ensure funding for our site and district. You may have students called out of class to the office to complete this process. We MUST have the students come up and apologize in advance for interrupting their participation in your program to do so. If they are in a critical activity and can not leave at that moment, please make sure they DO come up during your class period. . Trying to get this last 23% is like herding kittens folks...we appreciate your help and support on this topic

Parent/Guardian:
Grossmont Union High School District is committed to providing the best possible education for all students and the best environment in which for them to learn. Spending a few minutes completing this survey is a way you can help bring more funding to your student’s school.
To comply with Dept. of Education guidelines this form must be completed annually.

On Wednesday, Oct. 10 we will give the PSAT exam to current grade 10 and 11 students. This is a minimum day for all students and requires a variety of grade 10 and 11 teachers to proctor the exam while several others support this effort with moving their classes for this critical college and career readiness and National Merit Scholarship qualification exam for grade 11. This is the ONLY way a student may qualify to become a National Merit Scholar--taking this exam on this date. We had one National Merit Scholar commendation from last year--current Senior Christian James.
More to come in our Monday 10/1 All Faculty and Staff meeting at 7:45 in S-8

New Tools and Features
  • Google Classroom saw two major and several smaller updates this summer. First, you can now easily organize your assignments on the new Classwork tab. Second, they added a grading feature that allows you to easily flip through all the assignments in a class, add comments from a comment bank, add a grade, and return the assign (video overview).
  • Adobe Spark is a free multimedia creation tool. It lets students (or you!) easily create a beautiful post, a well-designed page, or a narrated video. We now have the premium version that includes more templates and other options. Want help figuring out how to have your students create one? Contact a DLC!
  • Virtual Reality! Do you want to take students on a guided tour of a historic site, explore the ocean floor, or take a trip down the Amazon river? GUHSDtech has a class set of iPods and Google Cardboard VR headsets available for checkout. If you want to bring an adventure to your classroom, check out our Virtual Reality resource page to see what’s available, learn how to make it happen in your classroom, and request the use of VR equipment. There are over 800 Google Expeditions available!
Reminder - Offline Chromebook Considerations
  • According to the BrightBytes survey, over 95% of our students have wifi access at home. Depending on the school, that number fluctuates between 93% and 98%. While those numbers are impressive, it also means that on average 2 or more students per class do NOT have internet access at home. Google Drive is available offline, but it has to be activated and resources such as PDFs or videos need to be downloaded while still at school. Please be conscious of this as you assign web-based activities to your students. For more information, check out our Chromebooks Offline Teacher Resource Guide. We also have a student version.
Questions? Check our the GUHSDtech website or email

Join the GUHSDtech team at the annual SDCUE Tech Fair on Saturday, November 3, at Hilltop High School.
If you want to attend, GUHSDtech will pay your registration fee!

Nominate an Inspirational Student or Teacher to Be Recognized on TV
The San Diego County Office of Education and NBC 7 San Diego invite you to nominate an inspirational student or teacher who is an outstanding individual on campus and within their community.

An Inspirational Student of the Month is a high school junior or senior who not only excels in their curriculum and demonstrates leadership, but who goes above and beyond and takes initiative to improve their school and community's environment through service, philanthropic efforts, personal values, or a positive influence. Nominate a student.

An Inspirational Teacher of the Month is a dedicated K-12 educator who brings their energy, enthusiasm, and creativity to the classroom every day. They face challenges with ingenuity, are held in high esteem by their peers and students, or set an inspiring example through their community service. Nominate a teacher.

NBC 7 education reporter Rory Devine will recognize the selected student or teacher with a surprise visit to their classroom and interview the recipient for an Inspirational Teacher/Student of the Month segment that airs during a weekday newscast.

Fund Your Innovative Learning Opportunity With a $500 Teacher Grant
North Island Credit Union, a division of California Credit Union, invites all San Diego area teachers who have a class project idea to apply for a grant through its bi-annual Teacher Grant Program.

Any full-time classroom teacher in San Diego County who is looking to fund an innovative classroom learning opportunity can apply. The project should have clearly defined learning objectives tied to students’ academic needs, display creativity, and benefit a significant number of students.

Ten grants of $500 each will be awarded in November. Click here for more information. The application deadline is Oct. 19.

Our very own Sara Jimenez (II Dept. Mod / Severe Program) won this last semester for equipment for her sensory room.
