With over 500 parents in attendance, our PACK Day was another great event welcoming parents into classrooms to experience a little bit of what our students do each and every day. THANK YOU for making this another terrific day! Your efforts welcoming parents, including them in the lesson and allowing them to experience West Hills through their students eyes is the best "marketing" we can hope to have!

Congratulations Kathy Worley our "Teacher of the Year"!

Teaching for over 25 years, Kathy currently teaches 5 different classes within our Advanced Manufacturing and Woodshop programs and is our CTE site Coorinator. Kathy "lives" on campus as she works with her students to complete their drafting, design and wood working projects. From Guitar making to bridges, Kathy models "life long learning" as she constantly stays on top of technology and teaching our students the skills, knowledge and attitude needed to earn a high wage, high demand job right out of high school. A Nationally Board Certified teacher, Kathy works with educators in a wide variety of ways to support and teach all learners. We are proud to call Kathy Worley our "Teacher of the Year"!

Image result for In the newsVery cool Union Tribune article last week on two WHHS Alums--From Ron Knopp:

Great, positive story about two of our graduates who are twins, Julia Toronczak and Michael Toronczak. Julia was a swimmer, strong student, and Best Buddies President in 2013-14 school year. Michael was a determined student in our Mh/Sh program. The article captures their story beautifully!

Image result for Testing calendar  CAASPP Testing Calendar

Please see this link to our website for the testing calendar. Every period 3 teacher will be given 3-hold punched copies in color to give to students to carry with them the week after spring break.

The following list is to assist anyone interested in understanding what goes into the consideration of a testing schedule. Feel free to skip this section if this is not you. 

A few items to note:
(a) The testing schedule is driven by the requirements of the tests we must give.

(b) Beginning the year before, Department Chair and Leadership discuss this schedule many times. We debrief and get feedback on what worked and what didn't from the pre-ceding testing schedule and work towards improvements, never knowing what the following year's requirements will be until late Fall.

(c) There are trade offs to every schedule and important choices that are discussed, reviewed, debated and ultimately decided by Department Chair and Leadership team.

(d) Every testing schedule must meet a myriad of requirements--state attendance and minimum educational minutes, federal and state requirements for tests given, our own GEA  and CSEA contractual working requirements, District transportation ability to serve required transportation pieces, and much more.

(e) We all make the best decisions for the entirety of the school campus which means a bit of flexibility on our block days. We have had good testing results based on this schedule and are very open to feedback regarding alternative testing schedules for next year. It is not possible to change this schedule this year.

Image result for Camp Lead    CAMP LEAD: We are looking for 15 students for our March 30-April 1 Camp Lead. If you have students to recommend, please talk with them and encourage them to see Tom Vanderhyde in SS 9. This is an AWESOME experience working for students staying in a beautiful Pine Valley Executive Camp location. The cabins are lovely and the food terrific! Please help us help others by reaching out to students to attend this powerful camp.  Thank you for the consideration.....

Image result for under construction sign

Coming soon....WHHS will have Five MAJOR construction projects!

Project #1: Football and Track Field and Stadium Closed: April 3-29, 2017: Our entire football  field will be replaced under warranty. Due to the extensive nature of this work, there will be NO ACCESS to any part of the track and field of any kind for anyone other than the installation crew.

Project #2: Beginning during Spring Break, our HOME ECONOMICS building will be CLOSED and remodeling begins to build an ADA compliant student restroom and additional specific facilities for students with moderate to severe disabilities. The entire facility will be fenced and the DG lot at the back of the school will be the construction staging areas (fair warning if you park back there). Both Mr. Knopp and Ms. Boehme will move to temporary classrooms elsewhere on campus and no access to any part of that building will remain until it re-opens FALL 2017. The building will also be re-named "PACK DEN" and new signage will be installed.

Project #3: Solar power installation / covered parking in the faculty and East Senior Parking Lot beginning at 1:00 June 8 (yes...the day of graduation): Both entrances and exits to these lots will be closed and no access will be available throughout the summer. This is expected to be ready for the start of school August 15.

Project #4: Summer School UPDATE: Location TBD--the construction schedule is of concern to meet our August 10 return of faculty...stay tuned.  Our Admin offices will move to the Library so every building can get heating and air conditioning units replaced under Prop U and Measure BB. ALL parking and access to these two building will be in the West Lot and the access road will be CLOSED with no faculty or staff parking for summer school on the interior of campus due to construction.

Project #5: The GYM will be CLOSED July 3-28, 2017 so the entire gym floor can be sanded down to bare wood and resurfaced. This is done once every 10 years to maintain the playing surface.  Chris Quarders, Don Rutledge and Josh Reiderer are communicating specifics to the ENS Department and coaches. If you have any questions, please see one of these gentlemen.
