As we know, education is more than "reading, writing, and arithmetic". I wanted to take a moment and remind all of us that we do have resources for employees through our Employee Assistance Program. These services are confidential, timely, and a benefit provided to you as an employee of the GUHSD. If you find you need to reach out beyond colleagues, friends, and family, sometimes the neutral, professional, caring third party is a good option. Our own students benefitted from this type of education and support recently. Please read below for an update.

“Check Your Mood” Update (emailed on Thursday)
All Staff,

Thank you so much for all your support spanning the weeks of March 28 - April 11 while we hosted "Check Your Mood" week on our campus.

A special thank you to our Math Department for hosting the suicide prevention education in your classrooms.

A total of 1,459 students (77% of our total student body) received suicide prevention education.  Of that number 134 students (9%) identified that they needed to be followed up with individually.  50 students (out of 134 or 37%) were then identified as needing more/ongoing mental health support.

Without your support these students would not have received services.

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Heather Eady

Continuous School Improvement: WASC Focus Groups are building

Please check with your Department Chair regarding this spreadsheet. If you are a Classified Staff member, please work with Chris Quarders unless you are in Guidance. There are tabs at the bottom of the page. Click the tab that applies to you. Read the Focus Group descriptions and let your Chair or Chris Quarders know which Focus Group topic you would like to work in. To keep the formating, they have edit rights, most of us have viewing rights. Thank you SCIENCE for already doing this! We need shared representation across all five groups so please talk with others as needed to "sprinkle" and not "clump". Yes, there will be two or more members in some groups from the same department and that is great--but we can't have 6 deparment members in one group, 2 in another and "none" in the other three. I hope this makes sense...

Image result for power versus influenceAnd finally for this week, a teacher kindly shared this short video with me regarding our impact in our jobs and the difference between "power" and "influence". It was his personal story at the end that brought it home to me. I hope you find inspiration and thoughtful review too as you watch this 8 minute presentation.

Robert Kaplinsky on the difference between power and influence. Who can you empower today? http://meetings.nctm.org/2016-annual-meeting/empower/
