I am very proud to announce West Hills earned a 6 year accreditation (through June 2024) with a one day mid-term revisit. This is just about the best we can do since almost no site gets a 6 year term with no revisit.

Thank you again to Randy Cambou our dedicated and organized WASC Coordinator, our wonderful Focus Group Leaders, our Department Chairs and to all faculty and staff for your dedication and work on this journey. Kudos with not only this self-reflective process, but for all of the day in and day out work of making West Hills a terrific school community! I also want to thank our parents and students for choosing West Hills and for participating in our WASC process as well. We will be sending out this information via Infinite Campus to them too.

I am so honored and proud to work with each of you and to be your principal. Just another piece of good news to enjoy with summer....Go Wolf Pack!!

We are excited to announce Mike Applebaum as our new Lead Campus Supervisor for West Hills!  Mike has been a member of the Wolf Pack since 2007.  He has proven his knowledge and ability over the years as a supervisor.  We look forward to his leadership in this role.  Please congratulate Mike the next time you see him! Currently we are interviewing for a new Campus Supervisor to join our team and will let you know as soon as that process is complete.

We want to welcome Mrs. Amy Reid to the Wolf Pack transferring from IDEA and Chaparral High Schools joining our stellar Social Science Department. Amy has taught within the District for several years, has a background in Global Studies, Politics and Sociology and a Special Education credential with Autism specialty. She will be teaching in SS-9 World and US History and is our Freshman Class Adviser. Reuben Hoffman took a position in San Diego Unified and so we are very lucky to have Mrs. Reid on faculty!

Here's to Alfonso Villasenor who is moving to the Health Occupations Center next door for the day shift. Alfonso has been a night custodian with us many years and we will miss him! We have posted this position and will be interviewing candidates soon.

Marilyn Cabral (Science)  is out on maternity leave for this semester and we are currently seeking a highly qualified substitute with a Biology credential. Her son, Kainoa is now one month old, weighs 11.7 lbs and is 23.25 inches long. Mom, Dad and Kainoa are  all doing great!

Getting Free College Tuition in California: Information to share

California has several programs to offer free Community College tuition to students. This article provides excellent information for you to use and to share if you like.

How to cope with the ‘Silent Recession'
“Silent Recession: Why California School Districts Are Underwater Despite Increases in Funding is a new report by the Comprehensive School Assistance Program at the nonprofit research organization WestEd. It examines the fiscal pressures, such as rising pension and special education costs, that are swamping many California school districts, despite funding increases under the Local Control Funding Formula. Authors Kelsey Krausen and Jason Willis suggest strategies to prioritize spending, and present a framework of tradeoffs and choices for school leaders to consider. Go here for the report.

Image result for UC "a-g"

With the new California Accountability systemCollege and Career Readiness is a critical indicator in evaluating our success as a school in addition to 7 other areas. You can see our initial data here (we have seen this before and will see it again 😎). At the District level and with Guidance this year, we have been in a series of work shops focusing on our UC "a-g" completion rate. You can find more information on what that is here with a short video.  We have begun to present data from our June, 2017 graduates to take a look at the numbers and the good news is we LEAD the DISTRICT with the highest UC "a-g" rates with 56% of our 2017 graduates achieving this goal. This is an important factor because this keeps ALL DOORS OPEN for our graduates so they can CHOOSE what post-secondary plan best fits them. How do we compare with California and the District? From the Public Policy Institute of California and their article on
College Readiness in California: A Look at Rigorous High School Course Taking, they note that in low-minority schools, the UC "a-g" completion rate is 34% and in high minority schools, 20%. For the GUHSD, it was 40%.

This is the continuation of the conversations we have been have the last three years on continuous school improvement. Because students have to earn a "C" or better in every class they take to be UC "a-g" eligible, our focused efforts on student support, academic and social-emotional support, as well as the entirety of our individual and collective practices within our classrooms and on campus, will remain central in our work.
Keeping the doors open for ALL students is the goal. We want every student to be in the position to make informed choices out of high school with every opportunity available. More to come on this as we talk with departments and continue our mission of educating every student.
