Site Literacy and Data Team Re-Convening: Please contact Ginny Bell if you are interested in attending our Literacy Work day with Lin Kuzmich on Tuesday, Nov. 5 8-2:30 in room E-8.  Our original Literacy Plan is in place, and we want to keep this work evolving and focused on current student needs.
Focus this year is on three components of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)--the "what", "how", and "why" of learning. Or in other words, equal (everyone is treated exactly the same) is not always equitable (everyone gets the supports they need to learn), learner variability (not every student learns the same way), and caring relationships allow for learning in a trusting and caring environment.

Reminder...All Call for teachers: the first two Mondays in December 2 and 9  during Collab time:  Using our Literacy groups, we will be scoring the practice CAASPP 11th grade written work. All teachers are asked to participate. Please report to your assigned room with laptops as we lead and learn together.

Golden Apple Student Choice Award Image result for Golden Apple

At Student Senate this week, the selection process for the GUHSD "Golden Apple" award process was discussed with Period 5 Student Senators. If you teach a period 5 class, could you please, at some time in the next few weeks, give 5 mins. to your students to review and discuss the attached criteria and list for selecting our 2020 "Golden Apple Teacher of the Year"? The goal is to allow Student Senators to truly represent their period 5 peers in this process, gathering input so they might vote for their class "top 5 candidates" from this list that includes criteria for selection, when they are next in Student Senate (Wednesday, Dec. 4). You are not "voting" in class--your Student Senator is gathering input to vote officially at the Dec. 4  Student Senate meeting. Results will be announced at the December 13 Winter Assembly.

If you could project the list, step into your office or outside the door for just a few minutes for students to discuss OR facilitate this however you like without your direct presence, that is ideal. (We do not want to put any teacher in any awkward situation listening to students discuss candidates for the Golden Apple  award).

This is the first time we are publishing this in advance and hope this is helpful in facilitating this student choice award. ***Eligible teachers must not have won in the last 5 years AND must have taught in the GUHSD the last 3 years thus not all teachers are on the list.***               Thank you.

“Get to Know Us” November 2019” Calendar (bit.ly/nov2019cal) - Thank you to all staff members who participated in a recent survey to share some “for fun” information. There were many excellent responses, and (thanks to the help of our amazing library student aides) we are excited to reveal the shared answers daily on social media: @WestHillsLib on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Here was our first reveal from Friday, November 1st.

Also, as pictured below, this week’s Resource Snack time is about Universal Design for Reading (UDR), which takes the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework and applies it to reading. This is a HUGE topic that several GUHSD Teacher Librarians shared about this weekend at SDCUE, but the Resource Snack Time offers just a bite for taste and includes a reminder that Destiny can also be used to search the WHHS library catalog (and not just for looking up student invoice information).
