Congratulations Ardy Riego our CTE Sports Medicine and ASB teacher. He was surprised on Friday with the District CTE Team naming him as our 2019 CTE District "Teacher of the Year".  Teaching since 2014, Ardy has taught the CTE Sports Medicine pathway a two-year course of study, taken students on regional Sports Medicine competitions, worked with industry sector partners to provide relevant, timely and current state of the art practices with his students and works with CTE teachers within the District. Ardy also sponsors the Sports Medicine Club and his student leaders have had very successful Health Career and Information nights for parents and students with expert panelists. Sandy Hook Promise Partnership: SAVE Club
(Students Against Violence Everywhere)
On Tuesday, March 19, Robin Ballarin and Jamie Gwyn took three students: Natalie Reiderer (11), Kylie Reiderer (11) and Olivia DiSabatino (11) to a Sandy Hook Promise workshop. (Other students recommended were invited but were not able to attend). At that workshop, each of the Sandy Hook Promise yearly  activities: "Hello Week", "Say Something" and "National Youth Violence Prevention Week" was discussed and school teams were given time to discuss and explore the best way to work with these programs on our own campuses. In the workshop, the organization Community Matters was presented with the Safe School Ambassadors Program. Students were very positive about this program and the idea was presented at the Department Chair and Leadership meeting this past Thursday. Please talk with your Department and other staff / faculty about this idea below. At our next Department Chair and Leadership meeting we will discuss if we would like to go forward with this idea. Jamie Gwyn has said she will be involved and we are looking for 5-7 other adults who are interested in the training and to act as mentors in this voluntary program in order to move forward is we agree as a faculty to do so.

The Safe School Ambassadors (SSA) program is a student-centered program that empowers leaders from the diverse student groups and cliques on campus and equips them with nonviolent communication and intervention skills to stop bullying, cyber-bullying and mistreatment among their peers.  It promotes positive peer-to-peer and adult-to-peer relationships, increases school safety, and improves the school climate. It is a proven anti-bullying and mistreatment prevention program and a research-based, field tested logic model which is designed for students in 4th-12th grade.
  • Community Matters partners with our school and provides students and staff with the training and resources necessary to implement the Safe School Ambassadors Program. We don’t just provide the training and leave. We provide you with live support and resources throughout the entire school year and whenever you need it.
  • 40 student “influencers” from all groups on campus to be trained (each year)
  • Two Day training for both students and adults
  • 1 adult for every 7-10 students
  • Follow up is once a month with students leading meetings with agendas from Community Matters / Students meet a second time in the month with or without an adult advisers.
  • A current grant pays the $6500 for the training.
  • West Hills could be trained any two days May 21-30 or wait until August to be trained (this would allow for incoming grade 9 to be included in stead of primarily current 10-11-12 graders).
