Light on Literacy moment....
Thank you Cathy Coffin for allowing us to share this strategy...please talk with her if you would like to know more on how to make this work with your students!
This strategy helps students to process their thinking around a central theme. Students have a great deal of difficulty in expressing original thinking (commentary) about factual (evidence based) information and this process breaks down the thinking into very concise small steps with the use of sticky notes and a progression of activity. Implemented over several days, students read a fictional work, and then, working to answer this "big question: "Do we "find" or "create" our true selves?" they took step by step actions to get their thoughts on paper (sticky notes), discussed as a class, and then began writing their longer response. Many students come to us without the skills to do this thinking independently (NWEA scores, PSAT scores), whether they have an IEP or not. This strategy is adaptable to many content areas and reaps benefits with student learning.
